BA in Black Studies and History
I currently work as a Branch Manager for the ESL Federal Credit Union in Rochester, NY. I began working for ESL as a Teller Intern in high school and planned to complete an Accounting degree at Geneseo to pursue a career in the financial services area. I had a turbulent start to my collegiate endeavor, but through history courses and the support of faculty and staff, I found the Black Studies major and an academic home. To many, my academic career does not align with my professional career but nothing could have prepared me any better for a tough leadership position with the most successful small to midsized Federal Credit Union in New York!
As I entered my first leadership position in 2010, I felt that the key skills of business writing, business acumen, effective communication, and critical thinking all came naturally to me. In a bigger sense, I felt as though the task of working and communicating with people was an extension of the skills I developed in my history and Black Studies classes. As the leader of a unit, I am charged with adopting a vision for success and working with a team to fulfill this vision. I spend my days communicating with my team on how to reach this vision through strategic planning and execution. Communicating clearly and establishing clear principles for success are paramount in my role; these skills are deeply rooted in the research and critical thinking capabilities that I cultivated during my time at SUNY Geneseo.
The content of my history and Black Studies courses has also influenced and grounded my commitment to community. They helped me understand my community engagement and volunteer work as part of something larger to myself.
My Leadership Bio is on the ESL FCU website. https://www.esl.org/about-us/convenient-banking/branches/cortez-jones
